Cheltenham Civic Society

Cheltenham Civic Society is a volunteer-run charity that is dedicated to making Cheltenham a beautiful, distinctive and liveable town. Tracing its roots back a century, the Society champions civic pride, heritage, conservation and high-quality placemaking while bringing people together to care for the places that matter.

The Society has delivered a range of lasting community projects, including the restoration of the iconic Gordon Lamp in the Promenade, the restoration of the Montpellier Bandstand, the creation of the Holst Statue celebrating one of Cheltenham’s most famous sons and most recently, the creation of the Great War Crosses Museum. It has established community groups such as FOMBAG (Friends of Montpellier Bandstand and Gardens) and Friends of the Minster Gardens, and partners with other community groups for maximum effect. It runs Cheltenham’s Heritage Open Days, Civic Awards and blue (and green) plaques scheme.

Alongside practical projects, Cheltenham Civic Society campaigns for high quality architecture, considerate planning, stronger protection of heritage, improved public spaces and a successful town centre that reflects Cheltenham’s unique character and architectural quality. Through education, advocacy and community action, the Society works to ensure Cheltenham remains a town of beauty, identity and civic pride for future generations.
