Holst Victorian House

Holst Victorian House is a historic museum in Cheltenham dedicated to the life of the English composer Gustav Holst, who was born there in 1874. Best known for composing The Planets, Holst spent his early years in the house, which has since been restored to reflect a typical middle-class Victorian home.

Located near Pittville Park, the museum allows visitors to explore authentic Victorian rooms, including a kitchen, nursery, bedroom and music room. These spaces are furnished with original and period objects that recreate everyday life in the late nineteenth century. A key attraction is Holst’s piano, on which he composed parts of The Planets.

The museum combines musical history with Victorian social history, helping visitors understand both Holst’s upbringing and daily life during the Victorian era. Interactive exhibitions, workshops and family activities provide an engaging experience for all ages, while demonstrations using the original coal-fired range offer a glimpse into traditional Victorian cooking.

Since opening as a museum in 1975, Holst Victorian House has remained an important cultural attraction, preserving Cheltenham’s heritage and celebrating one of Britain’s most famous composers.
