The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum

The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum houses significant museum and art collections with a strong emphasis on fine art, decorative arts, and local history. Its fine art holdings include paintings, drawings, and prints spanning several centuries, with works by British and European artists. The decorative arts collection is particularly notable for its Arts and Crafts movement pieces, including furniture, metalwork, and textiles associated with designers such as C. R. Ashbee.

The museum also holds an important collection of ceramics, ranging from English pottery to international examples, alongside costume and textile collections that document changes in fashion and craftsmanship. Its local history archive preserves artefacts, photographs, and documents relating to Cheltenham’s development as a Regency spa town, offering insight into social, economic, and cultural life over time.

In addition, the museum cares for objects linked to Antarctic explorer Edward Wilson, after whom it is named, including personal items and artworks. The collections are displayed through a mix of permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions, allowing for both preservation and continued public engagement with Cheltenham’s artistic and historical heritage.
