The second Baron de Ferrières also collected contemporary paintings. Cornelius Springer was an upcoming Dutch painter at the time de Ferrières was collecting, winning a gold medal for a painting of a church interior in 1847. He became well-known for his paintings of architecture and street scenes. The Wilson holds some of the only Springer’s in public collections in the UK. The paintings View of the Hoofdwacht and Grote Kerk, Zwolle and The Stadthuis, Kampen, both painted in 1862, show that the Baron was collecting new work from Dutch and Belgian artists while living in Wales, and right up to the time of his death only two years after they were painted in 1864.
